However, there is increasing awareness of the fact that the immediately post-weaning
feed intake and health status of piglets in commercial pig units does not permit this maximum protein accretion to occur and does not justify these high protein and amino acid allowances. In contrary, high dietary protein levels create unfavourable intestinal conditions that may jeopardize piglet health and performance and enhance the risk of digestive disorders. High protein levels are contra-indicated rather than recommended in phase 1 pre-starters. Amino acid supply is not growth limiting in this stage of life. Such transition feeds should be focussed on feed intake and health support.
